2010 - Library Wines

Vintage Notes

A moderate spring, led to a cool summer and temperate fall. The small, heat spikes we are accustomed to in August, September, and October didn't deliver this year, which led to slow ripening and an extra long hang time. I chose to add a white wine to my portfolio this year, returning to the grape that was the brain child behind Nagy wines. The viognier and pinot noir came in before any rainy weather hit. The syrah just wasn't quite ripe yet before the first storm in early October. I wanted to wait for a more intense flavor development. Being such a hearty grape, it benefited from a little rain and ripened beautifully. Happy I waited out the storm, I picked on a cool and crisp morning, October 22nd, the day before the next storm hit.

90 pts "Inky ruby. High-pitched aromas of dark berries, lavender and cracked pepper, with notes of pipe tobacco and licorice adding depth. Sappy and precise, offering zesty blackberry and boysenberry flavors and showing a spine of gentle acidity. Closes spicy and long, with resonating floral notes and very good cling."

Connoisseurs’ Guide to California Wine - October 2013

88 pts "If on the one hand earning very good marks for its richness and fine concentration, this singular effort sports a fair dose of oak whose charry inclinations may be a bit much for some. We, on the other, confess to being taken by its richness and reach, and, if tightening up after a near-silky start, this solid rendition is one that belies any notion that Pinot Noir must necessarily be drunk up while but a few years old."

    Wine Advocate - Issue 208 - August 2013

90 pts "The 2010 Pinot Noir Garey Ranch Vineyard is a pretty, medium-bodied effort that has plenty of black cherry and black raspberry fruit, earth and hints of underbrush emerging from the glass. Supple and lively, with silky tannin and good acidity, it’s an impressive all around Pinot that will have another 7-8 years of longevity. Drink now-2020." - Jeb Dunnuck

    Wine Enthusiast - WineMag.com Cellar Selection - April 2013

92 pts "On the palate, this wine is rich and complex, with flavors of dried cherry, cola, licorice, red currant and sandalwood that finish bone dry. It has lots of acidity and some sandpaper-like tannins. This should begin to develop bottle-age notes after 2016." - S.H.

James Suckling - Tied for top scoring Central Coast white

92 pts "A pretty and balanced white with white peaches, kiwi and hints of lemon grass. Full and flavorful with bright acidity and a spicy finish. Intense finish. Complex finish. Drink now."

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar - Issue 159

89 pts "Green-tinged yellow. Highly fragrant, spice-accented aromas of citrus fruits, apple and nectarine. Fresh and light on its feet, with good depth to its floral honey, orange and orchard fruit flavors. In a delicate style for the variety, this viognier finishes with very good cut and length."

Kathy Marks Hartesy pick of the week for Oct 19-26, The New Times 2011 Issue 12

"This classic Rhone white is so pretty and elegant, no one would imagine you paid so little for it at $20 retail. It offers intriguing aromas and flavors of apricot, nectarine, and white peach, with notes of minerals, spice, and fruit blossoms. It’s made by the talented winemaker Clarissa Nagy, who’s also the consultant for the famed Bonaccorsi Wines in Santa Barbara County. Pair it with a cheese plate with feta, fontina, gruyere, and/or Monterey Jack; main dish salads that combine fruit, nuts, and greens; sweet-sauced duck breast; or Thanksgiving dinner. It’s available at Gather in Arroyo Grande, Vintage 1255 in SLO, Olde Town Market in Orcutt, and Los Olivos Grocery."
